US gov’t investigates complaints on Ford Explorer flying parts

By Christian George

The US government is investigating reports against Ford Explorer windshield trim panels flying off on high-speed.

Roughly 164 complaints have been lodged about the SUV windshield trim panels flying off of Ford Explorers while they are traveling at highway speeds.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed that 164 complaints have been lodged about the trim pieces detaching on 2011 through 2019 Explorer SUVs. The probe covers about 1.86 million vehicles.

The agency added that the falling part can hit a motor cycle or lead to loss of control of the vehicle.

NHTSA says it will determine how often the problem happens and the safety consequences of the trim pieces flying off the vehicles.

AP reported that the investigation could lead to a recall, but so far there has not been one.

However, Ford says it is working with NHTSA on the investigation.
