Scientists should be licensed to build AI products, according to the professional organization for computer employees.

Rashik Parmar, president of the chartered institute for IT staff, the British Computer Society, made his remarks after the Competition and Markets Authority initiated an investigation into the AI sector.

The investigation comes amid concerns that large software corporations like Microsoft are becoming too dominating in the fast-paced business.

“I would not want a surgeon to operate on me who did not have the right kind of code of ethics, was competent, ethical,” Mr. Parmar said. “And yet we allow IT professionals to build and deploy complex technologies without the same level of professionalism. I think we need to have some level of professionalism that’s certified in the right way,” he added.

He advocated for a registry of computer scientists working on AI technologies in “critical infrastructure” or that “could potentially endanger human life.”

As technology like ChatGPT and its variants become more commonplace, public trust in AI systems to make choices on humans’ behalf is growing.
