The Nigerian telecommunications authority has now authorized a total of 1,891 phones for sale in the nation.

The Nigerian Communications Commission, which evaluated the various brands and types of devices, verified that they had complied with the appropriate type approval requirements so that they may be supplied to Nigerian consumers.

The country’s telecommunications regulatory body has now certified 1,891 phones for sale in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Communications Commission evaluated the devices, which come in a variety of brands and types, and verified that they had passed all statutory type clearance requirements needed to be marketed to Nigerian consumers.

The number of phones that the NCC had approved as of April of this year was 1,843. This demonstrates that in the last six months, 48 new phone models received clearance from makers of mobile phones.

According to Nairametrics’ most recent type-approved phone data, Chinese mobile manufacturers continue to control the majority of the market for certified devices in the nation. With over 300 models of its phones approved, Tecno was in the lead.

The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, recently cautioned Nigerians not to purchase any phones that have not been certified for the market by the regulator in a statement regarding efforts to ensure that all phones in the nation are type-approved.

Danbatta, who disapproved of the prevalence of fake phones in the nation, said: “The menace of counterfeit and substandard handsets has assumed a global dimension and requires a lot of education on the part of the consumers and collaboration with other government agencies to address it.

“Cases of influx and patronage of counterfeit handsets are more rampant in developing countries, such as Nigeria, where importers bring in substandard phones without recourse to the regulatory type-approval process aimed at certifying such devices as fit for the market.”

Nigeria’s phone industry continues to be a significant market for mobile device producers worldwide with more than 200 million active mobile subscriptions as of September 2022.
