Fake ChatGPT apps flood Google, Apple stores

Fake ChatGPT apps flood Google, Apple stores

Several fake apps have been discovered to be impersonating popular artificial intelligence, OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot.

These apps have swamped the Google Play Store for Android and the Apple iOS Store for iPhone where they have been tricking unsuspecting users into paying membership fees.

However, the genuine AI technology is right now accessible and free to use on its website.

On November 30, 2022, ChatGPT’s beta version was released; users were not required to pay a subscription fee.

To use the chatbot, users of ChatGPT merely needed to register with a Google or Microsoft email.

On the other hand, one of the fraudulent apps on the Apple Store charged consumers a $7.99 subscription fee and had received numerous downloads.

Upon searching for ChatGPT on the Google Play Store, check revealed that almost 10 results are returned with some of the programs haven received over 100,000 downloads.

Meanwhile, Apple and Google had not acted against these rip-off apps as of the time this complaint was filed.

The PUNCH, however, emailed Apple Support to request input on the phony apps but had not gotten a response as of the time of this report’s writing.
