Amazon Web Services has launched in Nigeria. Amazon Web services is one of the world’s broadly adopted cloud offerings.
The company has launched a new AWS Local Zone location in Lagos, Nigeria.“The launch of the AWS Local Zone location in Lagos is a significant milestone for our regional enterprises and digital transformation agenda.
The services available with AWS Local Zones will promote and accelerate the introduction of new digital solutions at our technology and engineering location in the heart of Lagos.” Hakeem Popoola Fahm, Lagos State commissioner for Science and Technology, highlighted the importance of an AWS Local Zones in Lagos.
By providing a hybrid cloud migration plan and simplifying IT processes, the launch of AWS in Nigeria would enable enterprises in the country to transfer more workloads. Clients at the event included the Terragon Group, Stanbic IBTC Holdings PLC, and the Lagos State Government.
The establishment of an AWS Local Zones presence in Lagos is critical because it enables quick, safe access to Amazon Web Services, allowing them to provide low-latency access to locally operating applications.
Customers can now deploy apps to end users or on-site data centers in one nanosecond or less using cloud services. Customers can also connect to the remainder of their workloads running in AWS regions while running low latency workloads on the platform.
“We’ve designed Local Zones to support a broad range of use cases—from trading applications that need to respond quickly to market fluctuations to interactive live event and gaming experiences. Customers in a variety of industries can now deliver new innovative services and experiences to their end users, all with familiar AWS infrastructure, services, APIs, and tools” Robin Njiru, AWS regional public sector lead for West, East, and Central Africa talked the importance of AWS to Nigerians.
What is an AWS local zone?
AWS Local Zones is an infrastructure that’s deployed by Amazon that enables clients and users to deliver applications that require very low latency to end-users using AWS compute, storage, databases, and other services that are located near major populations, industries, and IT centers.
Enterprises can use AWS Local Zones to transfer additional workloads to AWS, supporting a hybrid cloud migration strategy and reducing IT operations.
It is a geographical area where AWS gathers data centers to serve its clients in the AWS environment. Customers will, however, require AWS infrastructure closer to their data source or end users, especially if their area does not match low latency or data residency criteria.
The debut of the AWS Local Zone Location in Lagos will let customers to deploy applications effectively and quickly, particularly closer to users in urban areas. Customers will also benefit from reduced latency, which is critical for use cases such as live streaming, online gaming, and AR/VR activities.
It can also assist clients that work in regulated industries such as the public sector, healthcare, or financial services, as they may choose or need to keep their data local and inside a geographical border.
AWS now has 32 AWS Local Zones worldwide, with an announced plan to add 24 more Local Zones globally.
